Gas Introduction
Sulfur hexafluoride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula SF6. It is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic and non-flammable stable gas at room temperature and pressure. Its molecular weight is 146.055. Its density is 6.0886kg/m3 at 20℃ and 0.1 MPa, which is about 5 times the density of air. The molecular structure of sulfur hexafluoride is octahedral, with a small bonding distance and high bonding energy. Therefore, its stability is very high. When the temperature does not exceed 180℃, its compatibility with electrical structural materials is similar to that of nitrogen.
Since the mid-1960s, SF6 has been widely used as an insulating medium for high-voltage electrical equipment. SF6 gas-insulated fully enclosed switchgear occupies much less space than conventional open high-voltage distribution equipment, and its operation is not affected by external meteorological and environmental conditions. Therefore, it is not only widely used in ultra-high voltage and ultra-high voltage power systems, but also has begun to be used in distribution networks (SF6 gas-insulated switchgear and ring network power supply units). The advantages of SF6 gas-insulated pipeline transmission lines are low dielectric loss, large transmission capacity, and can be used in high-drop situations. Therefore, they are often used in hydropower station outlets to replace conventional oil-filled cables. SF6 gas-insulated transformers have the advantages of fireproof and explosion-proof. This type of distribution transformer is particularly suitable for power supply in densely populated areas and high-rise buildings. SF6 gas-insulated ultra-high voltage transformers have been successfully developed, and all-gas-insulated substations will be a direction for the development of substation technology.
Because the density of sulfur hexafluoride is almost five times that of air, when people inhale sulfur hexafluoride, the wavelength of the mechanical waves emitted will become longer when speaking, and the speech will sound more like a man, while helium is just the opposite. After inhalation, the wavelength becomes shorter and the speech sounds more like a woman.
